Fan Index Week 1: The top 10 college football fan bases in America

College Football Fan Index presented by Degree is a data-based ranking of America's most engaged fan bases, as determined by social media activity and online polling. Read on for this week's results, and come back each Thursday for the new Fan Index.

The Fan Index Week 1 top 10

Joshua S. Kelly-USA TODAY Sports

1. Ohio State (21,287 social mentions, 189 voting points)

It's been a rough stretch for Buckeyes fans. Last week, after Ohio State announced star quarterback Braxton Miller would miss the entire season with a shoulder injury, fans took to Twitter to wallow in the loss together. Miller, who plans to take advantage of his final year of eligibility next season, had successful surgery and appears to be in good spirits. We'll see if redshirt freshman QB J.T. Barrett can fill the void.

2. Michigan (20,028 social mentions, 249 voting points) -- This week, still-bitter Wolverines fans are hoping their team can avenge their infamous 2007 loss to Appalachian State.

3. USC (191,980 social mentions, 81 voting points) -- Southern Cal diehards had a bizarre few days trying to suss out the details of the Josh Shaw story.

4. Alabama (50,688 social mentions, 77 voting points) -- Nick Saban's squad is primed for another big year; it's No. 2 in both the AP and Coaches polls. Roll Tide.

5. Oregon (16,806 social mentions, 1,154 voting points) -- The well-dressed Ducks are ready to roll. After all, as Paul Myerberg put it: "A healthy Oregon is an unstoppable Oregon."

6. Penn State (19,256 social mentions, 145 voting points) -- Get excited Penn State supporters: New head coach James Franklin's daughter has a future as a linebacker.

7. LSU (23,109 social mentions, 51 voting points) -- Monster freshman running back Leonard Fournette is already turning heads in SEC country.

8. Florida State (17,484 social mentions, 81 voting points) -- FSU fans are sitting pretty these days; the defending national champ is also the top-ranked team in the country.

9. Auburn (16,400 social mentions, 156 voting points) -- Apparently, Auburn fans now are buying the same sweater vest -- at more than $100 a pop -- that coach Gus Malzahn wears.

10. Tennessee (18,817 social mentions, 54 voting points) -- Tennessee is now using Beyoncé as a recruiting tool. We assume Vols fans approve.

Interesting takeaways: Bitter rivals Ohio State and Michigan were very close for the top spot. Stanford (11th in the Amway Coaches Poll) finished lower than any other Top 25 team (No. 57).

Week 1 poll results: best uniforms

Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

1. Oregon (31% of the vote)

Gaudy, irreverent -- and some might say completely ridiculous -- Oregon's uniforms are, whether you like them or not, a topic of conversation among college football fans. By now, I'm not sure what combination of colors and patterns are left to try, but I'm sure Nike will come up with something.

Week 1 poll runners-up: Michigan (7%), Boise State (5%), Ohio State (5%), Auburn (4%), Notre Dame (4%), Penn State (4%), seven tied with 2%

Interesting takeaways: For a small school, blue-clad Boise State got lots of love. Maryland's colorful Under Armour uniforms placed them 19th in the poll.

Week 2 topic: best fight songs
